Apparel and Textiles

Would you like to learn how to sew?  In this project, 4-H members learn to operate a sewing machine.  Start by learning to sew a straight seam and smooth curves.  Then work your way up to casings, zippers, buttonholes, and more.  Besides making your own clothing, you can make lots of other things out of fabric—duffle bags, tote bags, pillows and other items for your room.  It’s for both boys and girls of all ages.  Learning to sew is a real life engineering and construction project.

People most often think of clothing when they hear the word “textiles.”  Did you know that textiles are used in all sorts of things, from automotive parts to human hearts?

Maybe sewing is not for you, but we all wear clothes and want to look our best.  The “Fashion Magic” project helps you make smart consumer decisions.  You’ll look in your closet to see what you already have, then determine how to spend your clothing dollars wisely.   Learn to look cool without spending all of your allowance!

Maybe you’re the creative type and want to create beautiful designs using needles and thread or yarn.  Learn to crochet, knit, embroider, quilt, or tat.  Once you learn the skill, the sky is the limit on what you can create!

Lots of 4-H members like to exhibit the things they've made at the fair. Judges compare the quality of the member's entry against a list of "standards"--qualities of a good product.

Members may enter products they've made in the county fair. An entry in the county fair which meets and exceeds the standard may be selected to represent the county in the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville.
