Food and Nutrition
4-H offers a variety of projects in food preparation for guys and girls of all ages. Join Super Star Chef in the kitchen to learn basic cooking and baking skills or for a trip to Farmers Market to learn more about fruits and vegetables. Did you realize that a kitchen is a terrific science lab? Learn healthy food selection, food safety and smart food purchasing as you cook in the kitchen. Go from preparing a single dish to an entire meal. Explore how food customs vary around the world. Take a look at careers in the food industry.
“Super-sized” fast food may sound like a treat but is it what’s best for your body…really? The old saying, “You are what you eat,” is true! Make healthy food choices and you’re on your way to a healthier life. You’ll learn what to eat, how much is an appropriate serving size, how to read the label, and the importance of a balanced diet and physical activity.
To get a project booklet and see if there are 4-H Clubs near you, contact you county’s Extension agent for 4-H. Click here to contact your agent.
Lots of 4-H members like to exhibit the things they've made at the fair. Judges compare the quality of the member's entry against a list of qualities of a good product--"standards."
Members may enter products they have made in the county fair. An entry from the county fair which meets or exceeds the standard may be selected to represent the county in the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville.
Entries in the State Fair: Food Food Preservation
As you learn to cook, compare what you make to the "standards" for that item.
