Research Interests

I have two primary academic interests and I use DNA sequencing techniques to address both. The primary focus of my post-doctoral research is to assess the strength of trophic connectedness between invertebrate predators and their prey in agroecosystems. This is done by sequencing predator and prey DNA and designing primers that will probe for prey DNA in the gut contents of predators. The importance of this research is that it allows evaluation of predation in the field and this information can be used to identify mechanisms of biological control and the capacity of predators for pest population regulation. Identification of the important predators of crop pests is the first step in the development of farming practices that promote the growth and maintenance of predator populations. The presence of healthy predator populations in and around crops when pest species arrive can limit pest population growth and prevent outbreaks. I have used DNA-based gut content analysis to evaluate the importance of a newly-discovered predator of the coffee berry borer, a pest that does millions of dollars of damage to coffee each year worldwide. My current research is on insect predator-prey relationships in Kentucky wheat and alfalfa fields and in Washington potato fields.

 

My Ph. D. research focused on the molecular systematics of snail-killing flies (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) and freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionoidea). My primary area of interest involved generating DNA-based phylogenetic trees to test hypotheses regarding the evolution of morphological, behavioral and ecological characters. When the characteristics of species living today are mapped onto a phylogenetic tree that shows relationships among species and their pattern of descent, inferences can be made about the appearance, behavior and habitat preference of their common ancestors. Phylogenetic trees have helped me to tease apart the evolution of feeding behaviors, habitat changes and larval morphological characters of snail-killing flies, breeding system evolution in clam shrimp (Branchiopoda: Spinicaudata), and the evolutionary changes that took place in the mitochondrial DNA of freshwater mussels. Such studies are important in understanding the evolutionary processes that have taken place as life on Earth evolved.
