The Kentucky Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (KAFCS) recently recognized three professionals and one student with ties to the University of Kentucky School of Human Environmental Sciences. Awards were presented as part of the 91st KAFCS Annual Meeting held in Lexington February 20 and 21.
Rachael Chihak, a UK senior majoring in Family Sciences, received the KAFCS Outstanding Student Award. Chihak currently serves on the KAFCS Board as the student unit chair and is serving as president of the UK Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She has been active in re-energizing the UK student unit and has provided leadership in a number of community service activities.
Sally Mineer, Lewis County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, received the Karen Davis Parker Outstanding Extension Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Award. Mineer began her career in Extension in 1988. She holds a bachelor’s degree in vocational home economics from Morehead State University and a master’s degree in vocational education from the University of Kentucky. She has been a member of KAFCS for 26 years and served the organization as president from 2004 to 2005.
Celeste Moore was recognized as the KAFCS Outstanding Professional in Family and Consumer Sciences. Moore received a B.S. in Home Economics from UK in 1989. While her career has been focused in business, she has maintained strong connections with family and consumer sciences. She first joined KAFCS as a student member in 1985 and has maintained her membership since that time. The association has benefitted from her writing and computing skills during the many years she has served as the KAFCS newsletter editor.
RaAnn Miller, Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Jessamine Career and Technology Center was recognized as the Mary Ludwig KAFCS Teacher of the Year. Miller received a M.S. in Vocational Education at UK in 2003. She has been a member of KAFCS for five years and currently serves as Vice President for Program Planning. Miller received the 2012 Kentucky Association of Career and Technical Education Teacher of the Year Award and is serving as president of the Kentucky Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences.
