Family Sciences

Undergraduate Programs

B.S. Degree in Family Sciences
This degree is suitable for family and consumer oriented employment with business, community, and public, private, or non-profit agencies and organizations. Graduates with a Family Science Bachelor's degree are well prepared to help individuals and families through careers in many local, state, and national settings. Graduates of this program are eligible to become Certified Family Life Educators (CFLEs), a professional certification of competency in ten primary areas:

  • Internal Dynamics of Families
  • Human Growth & Development
  • Human Sexuality
  • Interpersonal Relationships
  • Family Resource Management
  • Parent Education & Guidance
  • Family Law & Public Policy

  • Family Life Education Methodology
B.S. Degree in Career and Technical Education (Family and Consumer Sciences option)
A second B.S. degree in Career and Technical Education with an option in Family and Consumer Sciences Education is offered jointly between the Department of Family Sciences and the Department of Community and Leadership Development.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education program prepares graduates for careers in middle school, high school, and adult education; Cooperative Extension services; and related fields. The teaching option is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and is approved by the Kentucky Department of Education.

Graduate and Professional School
An undergraduate degree in family science also provides a solid foundation for those interested in pursuing careers in family law or family therapy. In addition to master's and doctoral programs in family sciences, the department has a nationally competitive master's program in Couples & Family Therapy. Outstanding Family Science students are well-positioned to apply for this program after completing an undergraduate degree.
Enrolled Students
Students enrolled in the School of Human Environmental Sciences should consult the college Advising Instructions page for detailed information regarding how to schedule an advising appointment for the College of Ag Advising Period preparing for Priority Registration. Many advisors use the college Electronic Advising Appointment Program; although, some advisors will provide other means for students to "sign-up" for advising appointments for the Priority Registration period. Contact advisors directly to schedule appointments at other times of the year.
Undergraduate programs in the School of Human Environmental Sciences are accredited through the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS).  Learn more about this accreditation via the AAFCS website.
