Hospitality Management and Tourism
Welcome to the Hospitality Management and Tourism (HMT) program. Students are guided to coursework and internship opportunities that will help them achieve their individual career goals.
Students will take courses designed to match industry requirements and expectations. Our curriculum challenges students to exercise creative thinking in marketing, communication, and facility operation settings. Courses are intended to provide students with the knowledge and experience they will need to understand current trends and applications in the hospitality and tourism industries. Upon graduation, HMT students will be able to apply their knowledge to business, management, and professional development skills.
Students are introduced to and complete hands-on projects focusing on several aspects of hospitality and tourism: Food & Beverage, Lodging, Attractions, Convention and Meeting Planning, Non-Profit Management and Special Event Coordinating. Courses such as, HMT 308: Principles of Food & Beverage, teaches students food service and menu planning concepts which they later use to complete their own restaurant critiques. In HMT 330: Meetings and Convention Management, students use hospitality industry websites like STR Global to analyze and interpret economic impacts of tourism developments in cities like San Diego, Chicago, and Las Vegas.

The Department of Retailing and Tourism Management offers many diverse opportunities for students to travel the world while earning course credit. As an alternative to education abroad trips offered through the university, HMT students also have the ability to visit multiple countries and enjoy unique educational experiences outside of classrooms through our HMT 486 Study Tour course. HMT 486 is a pre-planned 3 credit course where students participate in a week-long domestic or international study tour with scheduled professional visits and tourism activities to expose students to hospitality activities and careers in worldly locations.
Our students have travelled to Panama, Paris, New York, Scotland, London, Florence, and many more! The ability to earn credit in a foreign country is an exceptional opportunity, and to make sure our students get to experience this, we offer scholarships and work with curriculum equivalencies to ensure these lifelong memories are made.
