From the Director
Dr. Ann Vail Fall has been an exciting time in the School of Human Environmental Sciences with many milestones and accomplishments to celebrate. We have secured new funding to support our work, celebrated the accomplishments of our alumni and welcomed our students back to campus for a new academic year. Throughout this year, a variety of events and activities have highlighted the first century of Family and Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Kentucky. We invite you to join us as we celebrate turning 100 on December 2.

FCS Extension to celebrate first century

Photo A series of events is planned for Tuesday, December 2, to celebrate the first 100 years of Family and Consumer Sciences Extension at the University of Kentucky. The day will begin with a celebration luncheon at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington and will conclude with dedication of a historical marker on the University of Kentucky campus.

UK receives $1.8 million to combat obesity

The University of Kentucky received a $1.8 million cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to focus on lowering obesity rates in the Kentucky communities most affected by the issue. "This is the first time the Centers for Disease Control have directly funded a Cooperative Extension program," said Ann Vail, director of the School of Human Environmental Sciences and principal investigator on the project.

HES students reach 800 youths through summer nutrition education program

Photo The University of Kentucky Nutrition Education Programs expanded their SNAP education nutrition efforts during the summer of 2014 through four teams of students who traveled the state providing programs for youth.

The Society for Research on Adolescence recently awarded doctoral student Albert Ksinan with a Civil Rights Data Collection Emerging Scholars Grant to analyze data from the United States Department of Education.

Photo UK HES Hall of Fame adds two new members
Longtime Extension educator Peggy Hurt Powell and former home economics faculty member and administrator the late Dr. Pauline Park Wilson Knapp were inducted into the UK School of Human Environmental Sciences Hall of Fame on October 17, 2014.

Photo UK FCS Extension agent named national educator of the year
Lora Lee Frazier Howard, Clay County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, was named the 2014 Educator of the Year by the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The recognition paid tribute to her efforts to empower Kentuckians to lead fuller, healthier lives.

Photo Atkinson receives National Guard volunteer award
Tyrone Atkinson, program coordinator for the Operation Military Kids program at UK received a high honor from the National Guard Bureau for his impact on Kentucky's military youth and youth programs. Earlier this fall, Gen. Frank Grass presented Tyrone with the Youth Development Volunteer Award.
