Student Organization Profile: Merchandising, Apparel, and Textiles (MAT) Club

The Merchandising, Apparel, and Textiles (MAT) Club is an organization for MAT majors. MAT Club provides excellent opportunities for members to participate in study tours, store visits, fundraising, and community service. MAT majors can advance their professional career by networking through the organization. It provides an avenue to associate with peers, alumni, and business leaders in our community and surrounding areas.

Each month, the MAT Club invites successful MAT interns, alumni, local business owners, retail store managers, visual merchandisers, designers, and career consultants to speak at the organization’s meetings. Various activities such as t-shirt sales at UK football games and a Halloween bake sale aid in raising funds for the organization’s activities. In the spring, members of the MAT Club visit the Americas Mart, a major apparel and accessories trade fair in Atlanta, Georgia. The trip is a great venue for professional networking with vendors and offers MAT Club members a means to identify job opportunities.

The MAT Club is proud to be a core sponsor of the Cotton Incorporated From Blue to Green Denim Drive.  Although denim is collected throughout the year, the main denim drive is held within the fall semester.  Denim is collected on campus and through businesses and organizations across Kentucky including Carhartt, county Extension offices, KEHA groups and local schools.

During the spring semester, the UK MAT Club and the Hospitality Management Association combine their talents for event planning and fashion forecasting to showcase some of Lexington's best fashions from local boutiques in the annual Color Me Spring Fashion Show. Guests participate in a lively silent auction and enjoy hors d'oeuvres while the fashion show takes place.

Membership in the MAT Club is open to all students within the Merchandising, Apparel and Textiles major.  Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month in 304 Erikson Hall. For more information, contact the club president, Madison Stephens ( or the MAT club advisor, Scarlett Wesley (
