Webber Receives NIH Grant

Dr. Kelly WebberThe School of Human Environmental Sciences congratulates Dr. Kelly Webber, Associate Professor, Department of Dietetics and Human Nutrition.  Dr. Webber recently received an R56 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The grant will fund a one year pilot study focused on interventions that are effective for achieving weight loss.

Dr. Webber will lead the project along with co-investigators Dr. Nancy Schoenberg, faculty member in the Department of Behavioral Science, and Dr. Glen Mays, faculty member in the Department of Health Services Management.  The study will compare an internet-based behavioral weight loss program with a face-to-face program, with both interventions including a portion controlled diet.  A cost-effectiveness analysis will also be conducted.  The findings from this study will have implications for weight loss treatment coverage by health insurers and will contribute to the knowledge base regarding weight loss treatments.

Dr. Webber stated, “I am excited to have this opportunity to further explore potential weight loss treatment programs.  My hope is to eventually extend this work and explore the unanswered questions not only about weight loss, but weight loss maintenance.”
