The Student Dietetic & Nutrition Association (SDNA) at the University of Kentucky aims to develop and encourage student interests in the study of nutrition and dietetics. SDNA accomplishes this through social and professional contacts between students, faculty, and other nutrition/dietetics professionals. In addition, the organization regularly participates in University and community outreach projects.

Dietetics and human nutrition students volunteer regularly at the Gods Pantry Food Bank (www.godspantry.org) in Lexington, KY. Gods Pantry has been collecting and distributing food for over 56 years to agencies across central and eastern KY. Hunger affects more in KY than most other states across the nation. On December 10th, members of SDNA sorted food, stacked barrels, and helped in the facility as needed.
SDNA members participated in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes in September 2013. Members had a great time walking to support Type 1 diabetes research!
SDNA is excited to partner with Seedleaf, a local organization to support sustainability, gardening, and feeding the hungry. SDNA members participated in the "Yes we Can!" Seedleaf event. Participants learned how to make homemade salsa and how to can foods properly. The salsa was donated to community kitchens in Lexington.
Dietetics and human nutrition students volunteer at Cardinal Hill Health Fair
SDNA members volunteered at the Cardinal Hill Health Fair on November 9, 2012. The students provided information and materials on healthy eating and wellness.
The University of Kentucky Student Dietetic and Nutrition Association spent time at the Hope Lodge on October 11, 2012. The Hope Lodge is run by the American Cancer Society and is a free service for cancer patients traveling to Lexington for their treatments. The Hope Lodge offers free lodging for cancer patients being treated in the Lexington area which allows them to live with other people going through similar experiences and have the support of staff and volunteers. Student Dietetic and Nutrition Association members were able to spend an evening with some of the patients and prepare a dinner for them.
The Universities Fighting World Hunger (www.ufwh.org) Symposium was held in Olancho, Honduras in March, 2012. Students from around the world were exposed to numerous demonstrations by American and international students about their college’s efforts to alleviate world hunger. Some students presented events such as Hunger Walks from their campus to state capital, in an effort to promote awareness of local hunger. Other students talked about establishing Campus Kitchens where fellow low-income students could have a meal supported and prepared by the community. Not only were the successes of other universities enlightening, but also the conversations with local Honduran students who were working towards sustaining their agriculture and educating others within their country. Upon completion of the three day conference UK SDNA felt encouraged and realized the potential UK has to diminish hunger, in our city and worldwide.
Dietetics and human nutrition students volunteered at Good Foods Coop in Lexington as part of the Saturday morning Green Sprout Club. Volunteers provided children with information on nutrition and physical activity.
