Merchandising, Apparel, and Textiles (MAT) Club Activities

Throughout the year MAT Club officers invite successful MAT interns, alumni, local business owners, retail store managers, visual merchandisers, designers, and career consultants to speak at their monthly meetings. Former guest speakers include representatives from Follett Corporation, Saks Fifth Avenue, Stella & Dot, Lexington business owners, White House Black Market, Von Maur, Abercrombie & Fitch, J. Peterman Company, and JcPenney.

ShirtMAT Club members also make trips to local boutiques and retail distribution centers.  These field trips are opportunities for students to see how retail processes and logistics operate while also interacting one-on-one with facility managers.  Members have taken tours of facilities such as, Ann Taylor Distribution Center in Louisville, KY, Guess Distribution Center in Louisville, KY, and Carhartt Distribution Center in Irvine, KY.

Every spring, MAT Club members visit AmericasMart in Atlanta. AmericasMart is one of the world’s largest wholesale trade centers for gift, home furnishings, and area rugs; members participate during the apparel and accessories trade fair. This is a great opportunity to make connections and network with thousands of vendors. MAT Club members have also secured job opportunities during such visits!

MAT club meetings are held the second Wednesday of every month in 304 Erikson Hall.

Yearly Events

MAT Club members hold events throughout the year to fundraise for future trips and club activities as well as, engaging with community involvement projects.

Denim Drive:

Drop Your JeansIn 2006, Cotton, Incorporated began a new recycling denim campaign called, “Blue Jeans Go Green”. Cotton, Incorporated takes used jean material and converts it into natural cotton fiber insulation that is used in the construction of homes and civic buildings.  In 2008, MAT Club members began collecting denim for the recycling campaign.

Over the past several years, MAT club members have collected thousands of jeans.  In 2013, 7,174 pairs were collected and over 1,900 scraps were donated, enough material to insulate 14 houses.  Since Cotton, Incorporated began their denim drive; they have collected nearly one million pairs of jeans and have produced 2 million square feet of insulation.
