Curriculum
Begin your trip to professional success with the programs in Family Science or Family and Consumer Sciences Education.  These programs are majors in the Department of Family Sciences.

Bachelor of Science in Family Sciences
Family Sciences emphasizes the integration of individual development, family development, and family economics and management.  Students may choose a program from among courses that focus on developmental theory, lifespan human development, family system dynamics, family intervention, family economics and management, consumer economics, and management of resources.  The program prepares professionals for positions of leadership in various settings including public and private service agencies and businesses. The Bachelor of Science in Family Sciences is accredited by AAFCS along with other Bachelor's degrees in the School of Human Environmental Sciences.

What will you study?
Required family and consumer science courses include such contemporary family issue areas as; family resource management, financial management, human development throughout the lifespan, psychology, sociology, family relations, research methods, and an internship in agencies in the community.

Family and Consumer Sciences Education
If you want to promote healthy families, consumer education, and nutrition and wellness to young people, this may be the path for you! Family and Consumer Sciences Education prepares you for career opportunities in a multitude of settings which include: formal classroom teaching in a middle school or high school setting; adult education; teaching students with special needs; working as a Cooperative Extension Service agent; employment as a Family and Consumer Sciences professional for a company that makes and sells consumer products. Plus, you may work in a variety of jobs from a community agency family life educator to a media development specialist in family and consumer sciences.

Students in this program receive a Bachelor of Science in Career and Technical Education through a program offered jointly with the Department of Community and Leadership Development.  The Career and Technical Education degree includes our Agricultural Education and Family and Consumer Sciences Education programs.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Education program is nationally accredited by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.  It is approved by the Kentucky Department of Education.  There is strong demand for Family and Consumer Science educators at the middle and high school level. These teachers are instrumental in promoting and providing education about the human sciences to new generations of leaders.

What will you study?
Students take courses in disciplinary, education, and professional content. Graduates of this degree pursue careers in both formal and informal education of agriculture or family and consumer sciences. Formal education opportunities include teaching in the middle school or high school classroom. Informal education opportunities include working in Extension and the public or private sectors of industry.
