2010-2011 Undergraduate Research in Nutrition and Food Science
Attending, and ultimately graduating, college is a life's dream for many of those currently enrolled in many colleges and universities around the world. While exciting college is also a time of stress and overcoming obstacles. One of these obstacles is paying tuition or expenses associated with college including; books, food, and gas for commuters. More students today, than ever before, are working to pay for their own college education. These students are working at the same time they are taking classes. This adds another dimension to the college experience and makes completing it all the more difficult. Good nutrition and regular physical activity often suffer the more a student works. This is due to the decreased amount of time these students have throughout their normal day because of their strenuous schedule. A survey with questions pertaining to school & work schedules, food choices, and exercise habits will be distributed to 200 students on the University of Kentucky campus. This research is important because, as previously stated, there are more students now more than ever working to pay their own college expenses. These students need to be aware of the importance of good nutrition and regular physical activity. These things will not only help the students' academic performance but will help with their work performance as well.
The percentage of subjects that were physically active who were employed of the students surveyed was 26.5% and the percentage of subjects that were physically active that are unemployed was 28%. There were 3.5% of subjects that were physically active and employed full-time and 23% subjects that were employed part-time. The percentage of subjects that are employed full-time that were inactive was 10% and the percentage of subjects that were employed part-time that were inactive was 15.5%, and 20% of the subjects that were unemployed were inactive.
There were 24% of subjects that were considered to have healthy dietary habits. There were 72% of subjects that were in the unhealthy dietary habits. Of those 10.5% of the subjects that were employed that had part-time work schedules and 5.5% of the subjects had full-time work schedules. There were 76% subjects that were in the unhealthy dietary habits group. Of those there were 36% that were employed with 33% of those subjects being employed part-time. There were 8% of subjects that were employed full-time. According to the data there was not a statistically significant difference between students that were employed and those that were unemployed in whether or not the students were physically active or had healthy dietary habits.
