Undergraduate Research Assistants

 

Graduate and Undergraduate Research Assistants are an essential part of the dairy research program in the University of Kentucky Department of Animal and Food Sciences. Carly Becker

Carly Becker is from Independence, KY.  She is a senior majoring in Animal Sciences.  She is very excited to become more knowledgeable about the dairy industry.

Julie Collette is originally from Union, KY and is a junior at UK majoring in Animal Sciences. She does not have a lot of dairy experience but is excited about learning more about dairy cattle as well as getting involved in research opportunities!

Tamara Compton is originally from Independence, KY. She is a senior at UK studying Animal Sciences/Pre-Vet and would like to be a mixed animal veterinarian. Tamara became interested in dairy cattle through some of her animal science courses and would like to learn more about them through the UK Dairy Club and assisting in research.

Alyssa D'Iorio is a freshman majoring in Animal Sciences/Pre-Vet from Langhorne, Pennsylvania. She became exposed to the dairy industry for the first time through the UK Block and Bridle Club and found a new interest in this area. Alyssa is eager and excited to expand her knowledge of different animals.

Eileen Donoghue is a sophomore at UK majoring in Animal Science/Pre-vet. She is originally from Frederick, Maryland, and gained an interest in the dairy industry when she first started taking animal science courses at UK. She is very excited to participate in this great opportunity to gain hands-on dairy experience.

Megan Hardy is a sophomore majoring in Animal Sciences. She was born and raised in Lexington and is very excited about working with the dairy research team at UK! She has little experience with dairy cattle but cannot wait to learn more and get some hands on experience with dairy research.

Jenna Klefot is a junior animal sciences student. She was born in Louisville but lived in Lexington for most of her life. She first got an interest in dairy cattle in my animal science courses freshmen year. She is very excited to get the chance to take part in dairy research and can’t wait to learn and gain experience within the field.


Jamie Leistner is a sophomore Animal Science major from Ashland, KY. Jamie aspires to one day become a veterinarian. While she has never had any experience in the dairy industry, she am passionate about all animals and cannot wait to gain experience!


Jessica Lowe is a junior Agricultural Biotechnology student from Belfry, KY. She will be working closely with research on Precision Dairy Farming as well as other projects conducted by the Dairy Research Team. During her work-study, Jessica hopes to gain valuable experience in a wet lab as well as becoming knowledgeable about the aspects of dairy farming.

Heather Mussell is a Junior majoring in Animal Sciences  at the University of Kentucky. She is from Louisville, Kentucky but is originally from Toronto, Canada. Her interest in dairy cows began her freshman year after a couple visits to the dairy unit  at UK. Although she has no background in dairy, she is very excited to be a new member of the dairy research team and broaden her knowledge in the industry.

   



Jake Richardson is a transfer sophomore from York, Pennsylvania. He is an Animal Science/Pre-vet major at the University of Kentucky and plans on becoming a large animal veterinarian. He has worked at a dairy farm during the summer and winter breaks for the past 4 years and is very excited about being involved in dairy cattle research.  

Samantha Smith is a junior at the University of Kentucky. She has an animal science and pre-vet major at UK. She grew up in Syracuse, New York. She is looking forward to broadening her horizons. In her animal science class, she gained an interest in dairy cattle. Although new to her, she looks forward to researching and learning as much as she can about dairy cattle.

 

Alexis Thompson is a sophomore studying Animal Science with an emphasis in Pre-Veterinary Studies and Dairy Sciences. She has participated in undergraduate research since her freshman year. She currently is working on a foot care study looking at various produces and their effects on digital dermatitis.


 

Melody Vanover is a recent graduate from the University of Kentucky with a major in Animal Science. She currently works at South Broadway Vet Clinic and hopes to become a veterinarian. Melody is interested in animal behavior and is very excited to be working with the UK dairy and their animal behavior research.   

 

Yu Zang

Yu Zang is a transfer student from China at the University of Kentucky majoring in Animal Science. He is very happy to gain knowledge with the dairy research team.
