The Certified Master Logger Program is a performance based certification program for logging firms. This is a “point-of-harvest” certification system that is designed to ensure proper harvesting techniques are in use by logging firms in the program. Certified Master Logging firms are field audited on a periodic basis to ensure that they are complying by the Certified Master Logger Standards (V. 8).The Certified Master Logger Program is one ofonly a handful of logging programs in the U.S. certified by Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood SmartLogging program (RA-SL-003285) and all Certified Master Loggers are SmartLogging certified. SmartLogging certification means that the Certified Master Logger Program adheres to the standards set forth by the SmartLogging Program. Timber and pulpwood harvested by Certified Master Loggers carries the SmartLogging verification mark.

FSC and SFI Chain of Custody
All Certified Master Loggers are also certified to harvest and transport Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) (certificate SCS-COC-004068) and American Tree Farm System (ATFS) (certificate NSF-SFI-COC-C0096467-CC1) timber and fiber.  This means that Certified Master Loggers maintain systems and documentation to track each load of timber or pulpwood harvested. This documentation helps forest industries be able to determine the source of their wood which can be a very important aspect of business for some industries. This documentation can provide assurances to landowners that their investment is being properly cared for.
