What is the difference between the Certified Master Logger Program and the Kentucky or Tennessee Master Logger Programs?

The Kentucky and Tennessee Master Logger Programs are educational and training programs only. Individuals go through these training programs and are designated Kentucky or Tennessee Master Loggers, however they are never checked to see if they are complying with all of the good logging practices taught in the courses.

In Kentucky, loggers are checked to determine if they are using Best Management Practices to protect water quality. However, this is only a small part of the standards of the Certified Master Logger Program. In contrast to the Kentucky and Tennessee Master Logger programs, the Certified Master Logger Program certifies, the firm not the individual and firms, are checked to see if they are using good logging practices. This makes the Certified Master Logger Program a performance certification and not simply a training certificate.
