Big Elk (formerly Starfire) Hydrogeology Plots
In April 1998, a non-compacted mine spoil research site was created on the Big Elk (formerly Starfire) surface mine site. The purpose of this research site was to monitor infiltration. A total of 38 lysimeters or subcatchment basins were installed at the site to measure interflow volumes. Data were collected from the site for nearly three years. After a four and one-half year period, the research site was revisited, and instrumentation was reinstalled to measure the volume, timing, and duration of discharge from the site. To answer questions regarding the temporal changes in infiltration characteristics, data from both time periods will be compared.
