Color may vary from solid black to mottled brown and black. Stout bodied snake reaching 2' as an adult. Nose is slightly pointed and upturned. Usually three rows of spots with alternating light and dark spots.


Often seen around water as this snake eats toads and occasionally a frog. When alarmed will hiss, puff and jerk and flatten their head. If this fails they may "play" dead.
