KSNPC status is: Special Concern


Moderately stout bodied with adults reaching 4' in length. The red belly is a dead give away. This is the same species as the yellowbelly watersnake but their ranges do not overlap.


Eats fish, frogs, toads, and tadpoles. Found in wooded swamps, river bottoms, and other wetland habitats. Like most water snakes it has a nasty disposition and will bite if handled.
