Dr. Edward L. Squires is a pioneer in the area of equine reproductive techniques, particularly in the non-surgical collection and transfer of equine embryos.  In his many years of equine research, he is credited with advancements in the hormonal regulation of the estrous cycle, progesterone in pregnant mares, ultrasonography, and the development of assisted reproductive techniques such as oocyte maturation, in vitro fertilization, embryo freezing, and fertility of cooled and frozen semen.

Photo of Dr. SquiresDr. Squires was born in Morgantown, West Virginia in 1947.  He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from West Virginia University before moving on to the University of Wisconsin to pursue studies in endocrinology and reproductive physiology.  After studying under Equine Research Hall of Fame member Dr. O. J. Ginther and receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, he was appointed to an assistant professorship at the University of New Hampshire, Department of Animal Science.  The offer of a professorship at Colorado State University brought Dr. Squires into its Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Lab in the Department of Physiology.  Dr. Squires’ focus narrowed from domestic animals to equine research, resulting in breakthroughs in artificial insemination, equine reproductive physiology and endocrinology, preservation of stallion semen, and techniques for embryo transfer, preservation and manipulation.  He has served as Supervisor of the Equine Reproduction Laboratory there for over 10 years.

As Director of the Preservation of Equine Genetics Program at Colorado State University, Dr. Squires has overseen numerous projects which seek to improve the reproductive efficiency of mares and stallions, such as those involving X- or Y-bearing semen selection, enhancing methods to freeze and bank equine embryos and semen, refining techniques for intracytoplasmic sperm injection, developing techniques to induce multiple ovulation, and the collection and maturation of oocytes.  Dr. Squires has contributed to such milestones in equine reproduction as techniques for cooling and freezing embryos, producing embryos in vitro, and the use of surrogates to continue the bloodlines of deceased mares.

Dr. Squires has received a number of awards and honors, including the Oliver P. Pennock Distinguished Service Award, the George Stubbs Award, Animal Physiology and Endocrinology Award, and Horse Person of the Year Award from the Colorado Horse Council.  A Fellow in the Equine Science Society, he is widely published, with more than 500 journal publications.  He is the author of 14 books, as well as 19 book chapters, and serves as the editor of the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science.
