With recent world events, and concern about disease outbreaks, the areas of biosecurity, disinfection and disaster planning/preparation are critical issues. I have been involved in biosecurity and equine infectious diseases for over 20 years, and they continue to be my primary areas of focus. I am also involved in the development of animal disaster plans for veterinarians and animal owners, which are all integrated with biosecurity. As one of the lead instructors for the Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) “Strengthening Community Agrosecurity Planning” program, I team teach the 2-day workshops, and the newly developed Train-the-Trainer program around the country. This is a nationally recognized and funded program.
I have formal teaching and advising commitments in the Veterinary Science Department as director of the Pre-Veterinary program, advising over 250 pre-veterinary students who are Kentucky residents. The University of Kentucky has the largest Pre-Veterinary program in the state, and we have consistently had well prepared students accepted to veterinary schools across the United States and abroad.
