Mission and Services

The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is to aid in the diagnosis, and control of animal diseases in Kentucky through laboratory testing, epidemiology and surveillance.  The VDL is a full-service diagnostic facility that offers comprehensive testing and consulting in the fields of microbiology, molecular biology, histopathology, clinical pathology, serology/immunology, toxicology, virology, extension and epidemiology.  The VDL aids in conserving valuable animal agricultural resources through the early detection of infectious, parasitic and nutritional diseases and by the identification of toxic agents or environmental contaminants.  In addition, the VDL facilitates interstate and international trade of animals by conducting regulatory and export sales testing.

Note:  The VDL is currently developing a state-of-the-art statewide animal health information network in conjunction with the Breathitt Veterinary Center and the Office of the State Veterinarian.  Please watch for enhanced web services that will provide you direct access to your case information, keep you better informed of diseases occurring throughout the state, and inform you about new laboratory test offerings.
