Our ongoing research in my laboratory at the Gluck Equine Research Center is focusing on three areas of fertility.
1. Differential gene expression in the endometrium of pregnant and non-pregnant mares during the time of maternal recognition of pregnancy. The mechanism of PGF2α regulation in the endometrium during this critical time of the pregnancy is essential for our understanding of maternal recognition of pregnancy.
2. The importance of seminal protein for sperm transport, elimination, and fertilization. We have identified seminal plasma proteins that regulate binding between uterine neutrophilic granulocytes and viable spermatozoa in the uterus. We are also investigating the role of SP22 in fertility of stallions.
3. Investigation of the mechanisms of delayed uterine clearance in response to breeding induced endometritis. Delayed uterine clearance is a major cause of subfertility in mares. We have previously showed that the condition is caused by impaired myometrial contractility. We are now investigating the mechanism of this dysfunction and we are exploring new treatment alternatives.
