Celebrating success

Each January, the School of Human Environmental Sciences celebrates the scholarly work of our faculty and staff. Recognitions included 16 external grants received, 41 refereed journal articles, 23 Extension publications, 44 refereed and conference abstracts, and thesis and dissertation mentors (19 total).

Conference addresses substance abuse issues

PhotoPrescription drug abuse and misuse are problems across Kentucky and the nation. In an effort to raise awareness of these issues, highlight successful prevention programs and develop local and regional partnerships, the University of Kentucky hosted the 3rd Annual Different Faces of Substance Abuse Conference in Lexington.

Piggy bank contest promotes Kentucky Saves Month

PhotoYouth from across the state put their creativity to work to design unique and eye-catching piggy banks. Winners from each Extension District were displayed in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort as part of the February celebration of Kentucky Saves Month.

Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death in Kentucky. In Lawrence County, a partnership project involving Family and Consumer Sciences Extension is educating citizens about diabetes.

Student Spotlight

In February, the School of HES launched a new spotlight series to introduce students completing their internship or student teaching placement. We share spotlight articles for three outstanding students, and invite you to follow this series via our website and Facebook page.
Members of the Hospitality Management Association traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for a career fair and industry learning opportunity. Full story

The University of Kentucky is partnering with Child Development Centers of the Bluegrass to build a childcare center on-campus. Learn how dietetics and nutrition students are involved in the process. Full story.

Congratulations to Joseph Higgins, graduate student in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, who successfully defended his master's thesis entitled, "An analysis of the influence of nutrition information on consumers' restaurant menu choices." His committee included Dr. Mary Roseman, Dr. Sandra Bastin, Dr. Bernhard Hennig and Dr. Jason Swanson.

Alumni Notes

PhotoOn Friday, February 24, the UK chapter of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences hosted a conversation with Mrs. Marianne Smith-Edge, HES Hall of Fame member and distinguished alumnus. Mrs. Smith-Edge is a passionate dietician, currently serving as a consultant for the US Department of Agriculture. Approximately fifty students attended the conversation where Smith-Edge offered advice about life after graduation and balancing work and family. She also encouraged students to get internships and make connections everywhere they went.
