Conference addresses substance abuse issues
Prescription drug abuse and misuse are problems across Kentucky and the nation. In an effort to raise awareness of these issues, highlight successful prevention programs and develop local and regional partnerships, the University of Kentucky hosted the 3rd Annual Different Faces of Substance Abuse Conference in Lexington.
Undergraduate research enhances student learning
Undergraduate Research (UR) is a great way for students to learn outside the classroom and gain much needed knowledge about their major and chosen career. The Department of Nutrition and Food Sciences is working to encourage undergraduate research.
Piggy bank contest promotes Kentucky Saves Month
Youth from across the state put their creativity to work to design unique and eye-catching piggy banks. Winners from each Extension District were displayed in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort as part of the February celebration of Kentucky Saves Month.

All-Star Dads program promotes physical activity
The All-Star Dads Program recognized fathers for spending time engaging in physical activity with their children. The pilot program was conducted in Gallatin, Harrison, Montgomery, and Wolfe Counties.
Lawrence County partnership addresses diabetes
Diabetes is the 6th leading cause of death in Kentucky. In Lawrence County, a partnership project involving Family and Consumer Sciences Extension is educating citizens about diabetes.
Promoting a healthy lifestyle
The Healthy Heroes program in Spencer County recognizes local citizens for their efforts to achieve a healthy lifestyle.

Congratulations to Joseph Higgins, graduate student in the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, who successfully defended his master's thesis entitled, "An analysis of the influence of nutrition information on consumers' restaurant menu choices." His committee included Dr. Mary Roseman, Dr. Sandra Bastin, Dr. Bernhard Hennig and Dr. Jason Swanson.
On Friday, February 24, the UK chapter of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences hosted a conversation with Mrs. Marianne Smith-Edge, HES Hall of Fame member and distinguished alumnus. Mrs. Smith-Edge is a passionate dietician, currently serving as a consultant for the US Department of Agriculture. Approximately fifty students attended the conversation where Smith-Edge offered advice about life after graduation and balancing work and family. She also encouraged students to get internships and make connections everywhere they went.
