website was developed to concentrate available web based
resources for agents to help address the needs and interests
of their local Latino/ Hispanic population. Most links
are government or national organizations. The intention
is also to provide background on issues affecting this population
and some cultural background.
Kentucky has experienced a dramatic increase in the numbers
of Spanish- speakers in last 15 years. The 2000 Census indicates
that Kentucky has 60,000 Latino/Hispanics. This represents
an increase of 173% with varying impact by county. The impact
this new and emerging population has on Kentucky is illustrated
by the maps available on this website. The growth of this
special population is uneven across the state but has affected
almost every part of Kentucky. The official census is an
undercount due to majority of immigrant being undocumented
who are unlikely to respond to official government surveys.
The majority of Hispanic/ Latino immigrants in Kentucky is
from Mexico and is often first generation with limited English
speaking language skills.
The Hispanic/ Latino impact on the infrastructure of needed
services such as health care, education, food assistance
and housing has been at times overwhelming. More and more
agencies both locally and at the state level have moved to
develop language capability in intake and outreach services.
Each of the link explains whether the information is in
English, Spanish, or in Bilingual format. Agents who are
limited Spanish speakers may find the bilingual links particularity
useful, since the information is presented in both languages.
This makes it more reliable in terms of understanding what
information is being communicated.
