(4) Improving constructed wetland technology for onsite wastewater and acid mine drainage treatment.

    Pls396 - SOIL JUDGING.; Credits - 1-2
    This course involves basic soil resource evaluation designed to provide the students with essential field training needed to pursue careers as soil scientists, conservationists, planners, agricultural chemical representatives and environmental assessors. It is also used to prepare the UK soil judging team for regional college competition. May be repeated to a maximum of five credit hours. Prereq: Consent of instructor. .

    Pls406 - ADVANCED SOIL JUDGING; Credits - 1
    A more advanced treatment of soil site evaluations under diverse climatic and physiographic environments. Students will obtain expertise in assessing properties of contrasting soil types and rating them for soil use and management suitability. The course is also used for preparing the UK soil judging team for national college competition. May be repeated to a maximum of four credit hours. Prereq: PLS 396 and qualifying for national competition. .

    This is also a new course designed to introduce students to the concepts of natural wetland ecosystems, their importance, functions, and their major features used for their identification. The course is also intended to provide basic training in the application of current technical criteria and guidelines for identification and delineation of jurisdictional wetlands utilizing documentation and analysis of field collected data..

    Pls456g - Constructed Wetlands; Credits - 3
    This is a new course designed to introduce the students to new technological concepts utilizing the functions of natural and constructed wetlands as inexpensive alternatives for wastewater purification. The course emphasizes the principles and mechanisms of the purification process and includes design, construction, operation, and management criteria for efficient usage. Several case studies involving mining, agricultural, municipal, and other industrial wastewater treatment applications are demonstrated during class discussions and field trips to specified constructed wetland locations..

    Study of concepts of soil horizons, soil profiles and soilscapes; morphological, physical, chemical and mineralogical parameters useful in their characterization. Soil forming factors and processes. Basic principles of soil classification. Characterization of selected Kentucky soils and their placement in the modern system; practical field problems in soil identification, characterization and classification. Lecture, two hours; laboratory, three hours per week. Prereq: PLS 366 and PLS 367 or consent of instructor. .

    This is a new course designed to introduce the students to basic laboratory methodology concepts applied to Pedology and Mineralogy Investigations; and to provide hands-on experience on using current analytical research protocols for solid and solution phase characterizations and making pedological and mineralogical interpretations..

    This course is an advanced study of soil evolution processes and their effects on their geographic distribution, classification, and utilization. It is intended to provide a better understanding of the soil resource at different stages of development by using a quantitative assessment of the physicochemical processes controlling its behavior and, developing improved soil use and management interpretations..
